  • Vietnam recognizes the International Driving Permit (IDP) under the 1968 Vienna Convention.
→ With an IDP + your national driving license, you are legally allowed to ride a motorbike in Vietnam.
  • A foreign driving license alone (without IDP) → not valid in Vietnam.
  • Long-term residents can convert their foreign license to a Vietnamese license at the Department of Transport.
  • Without a Valid License + Permit: In practice, many tourists still rent and ride motorbikes. However: Police may fine ~9.000.000 VND if stopped. Most importantly: travel insurance will not cover accidents if you don’t have a valid license.
